AFL is a housing option for people who want to live in a family setting. An individual lives with a family in a private residence, with or without other people with disabilities, and the family serves as a natural support system, meeting needs that may arise.
Available in Orange County.
Community Guide Services provide support to individuals in developing social networks and connections within local communities. The purpose of the service is to promote self-determination, increase independence, and enhance the individual’s ability to interact with and contribute to his or her local community.
Individual must have Medicaid to receive Community Guide Services.
Community Guide can assist:
• with locating non-Medicaid community supports and resources; this includes social activities, classes, volunteer opportunities, and educational resources.
• the individual and family with advocating for school services.
• in locating options for renting or purchasing a personal residence; assist with purchasing furnishings for the personal residence.
• the family in locating day/child care options.
• the individual with identifying a self-advocacy organization or other advocacy resources.
• with explaining guardianship and alternatives to guardianship.

Individual Services offers a unique approach to serving individuals who have funding sources like the Innovations waiver. The Arc hires, trains and supervises support staff. Services based on individual need as well as funding.

COMMUNITY LIVING & SUPPORTS
This service provides training to help the participant acquire and maintain skills that promote independence. Community Living and Supports (CLS) is a supplement to family and natural supports and consists of an array of services that help enhance the individual’s life in the community, including but not limited to:
- Interpersonal skills and how to develop and maintain personal relationships
- Community living skills such as shopping, banking, and other community activities
- Services that are essential to health and wellness, such as therapeutic exercises, supervision of self-administration of medication, transferring, ambulation, and using special mobility devices
- Transportation to activities that support CLS related goals
There is an additional component of support and supervision in regards to a participant’s performance of daily living skills which could include the following areas:
- Personal hygiene and bathing
- Performing housekeeping chores deemed essential to the individual’s health and welfare and incidental to care or otherwise included in the Individual Specific Plan
- Assessing and monitoring health status through activities such as transferring, ambulation, and the use of special mobility devices
Community Living and Supports is a combination of In-Home Skill Building and Personal Care which will be phased out by Nov 2017. (01/17)
This service provides access to activities that help the participant integrate with the community at large and learn to develop relationships with non-disabled individuals in the community. Community Networking consists of an array of services designed to help the individual find meaning in his/her life and to promote independence, including but not limited to:
- Attending classes dedicated to hobbies/leisure interests
- Participating in adult education
- Volunteering for a local business
- Using public transit
- Transportation from the individual’s residence to the training site(s)
This service provides periodic support and relief to a participant’s primary caregiver so that the caregiver may attend to errands, spend time with other members of the family, or participate in events. Respite may include services in or outside of the participant’s home and can include the following:
- Overnight care
- Weekend care
- Emergency care
- Continuous care for up to 10 consecutive days (This service is only for the individual, not for any siblings or other family members.)

Project SEE [Supported Employment Experience]
A summer internship program for Wake County high school age students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities currently enrolled in the Occupational Course of Study program that helps students to:
- Earn Occupational Course of Study [OCS] high school credit
- Enhance job skills that can lead to long term employment for many
- Receive training and support at every job site
Project SEE (Supported Employment Experience) gives students the opportunity to develop or enhance their social skills and gain valuable work experience through a 6 week summer program while earning 135 hours of competitive employment towards their OCS graduation requirements.
Registration is open from March 1 through April 29th. Applications will not be considered if there is any missing information.
The Project SEE Program Director and Admissions Committee will assess the eligibility of each student who submits an application. To determine eligibility, the Supported Employment Director will review documentation of the student’s disability, verify OCS credit needs and interview the student with his/her parent or caregiver. Priority for selection is given to eligible students who are aging out of the school system and who require at least 135 credit hours towards graduation.
Students eligible for Project SEE are those who:
- are between the ages of 17 and 22 and have mild to moderate developmental disabilities.
- demonstrate emerging vocational skills and the ability to engage in purposeful activity.
- want to learn to work in the community and have families/caregivers who are supportive of their participation in Project SEE.
- have or can arrange for their own transportation to and from the job site.
- need on-site support on the job in order to work in the community.
- are able to work in a public job site in a ratio of 2 students to 1 job trainer.
- have personal care skills and behaviors which can be accommodated at a public job site.
- have the health status and availability to commit to the full 6 weeks. Vacations and summer camps are not to be scheduled during the 6 week program.
- have the stamina and physical ability to work 4.5 hours per day, 5 days per week.
*Completed applications are to be mailed or hand delivered to The Arc of the Triangle, 5121 Hollyridge Dr., Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27612, no later than TBD along with the $30.00 application fee. The application fee is non-refundable and incomplete applications will not be considered.
Program dates: June 24 - August 2, 2019 (There will a vacation day on Thursday July 4th and all interns are required to be back at work on Friday July 5th.)
Students work 9:00 am -2:00 pm Monday - Friday with a half hour break.

B3 Respite Services provides relief to primary caregiver(s). Families need to know their loved one is in good hands and being supported.
B3 Respite Services may be available for individuals who have Medicaid, but do not have the Innovations Waiver. This service provides periodic support and relief to a participant’s primary caregiver so that the caregiver may attend to errands, spend time with other members of the family, or participate in events. Respite may include services in or outside of the participant’s home.
Durham Voucher Respite Program (Durham County residents only): The Respite Voucher Program is meant to support caregivers and parents who take care of a loved one with a qualifying developmental disability with financial assistance to pay for respite care.
The Managed Care Organization, Alliance Health, funds The Arc of the Triangle each year so we can pass the money to our Durham County families that are waiting for state or Innovations Waiver (Medicaid) services for their family members. The program requires that the money only be given to a caregiver, that is hired and scheduled by the family, that lives outside of the home. This ensures that the household members are truly getting a few hours break from caregiving each month.
This program is for families who do NOT have Medicaid and must live in Durham County.

The Arc of the Triangle’s Supported Employment
provide support to adults looking for permanent employment in the community.
Services include assessment, job development, coaching, intensive training, and long-term follow along.
Your Arc of the Triangle Employment Specialist will:
- Meet with you to learn about your skills, abilities and interests to help you find a job.
- Work with you to create a resume and build interview skills.
- Advocate to find potential job opportunities.
- Take you to meet employers and help you through the application and interview process.
- Provide you with a job coach to provide on the job training to ensure maximum independence and success.
- Assist you with transportation training if needed.
- Monitor your work and progress.
- Help you to become part of the work team.
- Provide long term supports and follow-up as needed.
