Supported Employment Experience

A paid* internship program for high school age students with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities currently enrolled in the Occupational Course of Study program in Wake County Public Schools, Durham Public Schools, and Chapel Hill Carrboro Schools that helps students to:

  • Earn Occupational Course of Study [OCS] high school credit
  • Support students getting ready to transition from school to employment
  • Enhance job skills that can lead to long term employment for many
  • Receive training and support at every job site

Project SEE gives students the opportunity to develop or enhance their social skills and gain valuable work experience while earning 120 hours of competitive employment towards their OCS graduation requirements.

This year we are pleased to add a classroom experience that will focus on:

  • self-advocacy skills
  • interview skills, resume writing, etc.
  • vocational exploration
  • post-secondary opportunities

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria. Students must:

  • be 17-21 years of age and must be currently enrolled in school.
  • have a diagnosis of mild to moderate developmental disabilities.
  • have the ability to engage in purposeful activity and communicate well with others.
  • can demonstrate emerging vocational skills.
  • have a basic understanding of what it means to have a job in the community.
  • will benefit from on-site support in order to work in the community.
  • are independent with their personal care.
  • are able to display appropriate workplace behaviors.
  • are committed to work through the completion of the program. Vacations, summer camps, and other commitments are not permitted during the internship.
  • have the stamina and physical ability to work up to 4.5 hours per day, up to 5 days per week.
  • have a bank account for direct deposit by the time the program begins.
  • have the ability to wear a face covering if required by the State or the job site.

    1. OCS teacher
    2. Triangle Disability & Autism Services
    3. your local VR office
  2. Return completed application** to either your VR Counselor or Project SEE Coordinator
  3. All eligible applicants will be contacted by Triangle Disability & Autism Services for an interview and to complete paperwork

Additional Program Information:

  • Students must commit to the entire program. Any missed hours must be made up in the weeks following the program at a location to be determined. In order to receive their Certificate of Completion from Triangle Disability & Autism Services each intern must complete the full program.
  • Students accepted to the program are matched to jobs based on interest, location and abilities.

Winter 2024 Program dates and times:

Pre-vocational workshop: 1/09- 1/11/2024 or 1/16- 1/18/2024 (online via Zoom)

On the job: Monday, 1/22/2024 and ends Friday, 4/12/2024

*Students will be paid $8.50/hour for all hours worked at their job site. Students are not paid for Orientation, Classroom/Online instruction, 30-minute daily lunch breaks.
