Triangle Grace Church is located at 5001 Tudor Place in Durham.

Triangle D&A University (formerly Arc Triangle University) began in 2020 as a series of online experiences for teens and adults with IDD on a variety of topics due to the Covid-19 pandemic and forced quarantine.

Triangle D&A University covers a myriad of topics and activities to engage our participants throughout the week.  We are pleased to announce some TDAU classes will be offered in-person!

Educational Classes ONLINE and/or IN-PERSON

COOKING & NUTRITION - In-Person

6-10 weeks; 60 minutes – Fee $85-120 

Cooking and Nutrition is designed to acquaint students with the elements of nutrition, nutritional meal preparation, and menu building. These classes will be both a discussion about cooking, nutrition and safety while a meal or dish is prepared and demonstrated by the instructor and prepared by the students. Discussions will be based around Kitchen Safety, Knife Safety, Fire Safety, Food Pyramid and more. Students will cook alongside the instructor and recipes will be simple enough to follow. Each week class there will be a different menu and ingredients will be provided to each student.

WORK READINESS - ONLINE

10 weeks; 60 minutes – Fee $65

  • Employability and Work Place Behavior – What are Employers Looking for? This class will focus on skills and abilities that employers want you to have.  Explore what you need to know to keep a new job for long term and successful employment. Pre-Requisite skills and abilities for independent learning: be able participate in a group conversation. Some note taking is required. Class Code: WR1
  • Resume Development This class will help you to learn how to gather necessary information about yourself in order to create a complete resume that you can use when applying for a job. Once you have completed the class, you will have what you need to create your resume with the template and resources provided. Pre-Requisite skills and abilities for independent learning: Participants must be able to participate in a group conversation. Note taking is required. Class Code: WR2
  • Applying for a Job This class will focus on how to find job openings, fill out an application, creating a cover letter (what are employers looking for), and how to follow up. We will share tips for getting an interview. Pre-Requisite skills and abilities for independent learning: Participants must be able to participate in a group conversation. Note taking is required. Class Code: WR3
  • Interviewing Do’s and Don’ts This class will focus on how to prepare for an interview including dressing for success and how to make a good first impression. We will review commonly asked interview questions and talk about what questions you should ask in an interview. Pre-Requisite skills and abilities for independent learning: Participants must be able to participate in a group discussion and be able to take notes. Class Code: WR4
  • College, Certificate Programs, and Other Post-Secondary Education Options Join us as we talk about NC College options including certificate programs at the Community College Level, modified on-campus experiences, as well as how to find vocational opportunities in your community.

Everyday “People Safety” Skills for Independence and Healthy Relationships Workshop – 10 weeks 60 minutes
 
Exceptional People Family Virtual Workshop
Our program gives people 16 and up and abilities the opportunity to learn and practice social-emotional safety skills from the comfort of their own homes and offices. Topics include:
 
• Act Aware Calm and Confident
• Practice how to Move Away from Trouble and Get Help
• Using clear boundaries about positive consent for touch, affection and teasing for Healthy Relationships
• Stay Safe from Bullying and Verbal Attacks
• Different ways to use Practice as a Management Tool for Unsafe, Disrespectful Behavior
• Making a Safety Plan for when at Home and out in the Community
• Stranger Safety in the Community
• Thinking and Checking First when Plans Change
• Technology Safety Strategies

Exercise & Movement Classes - ONLINE and/or IN-PERSON

6-10 weeks; 60 minutes- Fee $20-30
Basic Workout

Basic Workout is designed to accommodate students of all levels and physical abilities. This class can be done seated or standing. Enjoy a low impact aerobic workout that will improve your flexibility and get your heart rate up! Items needed: Comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, water bottle.

Cardio Conditioning (Basic Workout is a pre-requisite to this class)

Cardio Conditioning is twice the fun. Burn fat and build muscle all at once. Designed to accommodate students of all levels and physical abilities. This class will get everyone up and moving, while building a sweat and learning exercises that can be done in your home without any equipment at all! A fully body workout to include cardio, core, arms, and lower body exercises. Items needed: Comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, water bottle, large towel or mat.

Cardio Dance

Cardio Dance is set to fun upbeat tunes (current and old school jams). Participants are guaranteed to work up a sweat and forget they are working out. All skill levels are welcome Items needed: Comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, water bottle.

Gentle Yoga

Gentle Yoga is designed to accommodate students of all levels and physical abilities. Poses will be done in a variety of positions (lying down, standing or sitting) and modifications suggested as needed. Participants will practice breathing, stretching, strengthening exercises and relaxation techniques which will help to improve your sense of well being. Items needed: Comfortable clothing, exercise mat or towel, water bottle.

The Arts (art & music) ONLINE

6-10 weeks; 60 minutes - Fee $20-30
Music Appreciation

Music Appreciation is designed to acquaint students with the elements of music and the primary musical periods of traditional Western European classical music. Students will have a brief overview of the major composers and their music through class meetings, listening to musical examples in class, reading, listening to musical examples provided on the student playlist or recordings and actively engaging in class discussions. This class will include music games, music composition and writing. All class material can be easily adaptive for all ranges of students and their abilities. Items needed: Pen, Pencil, Paper. 5 weeks

Sing-a-long

Sing-a-long will go over the fundamentals of singing and is designed for students with little or no previous voice training. Students will learn basic techniques of vocal production. You will learn about breathing, articulation, resonance, support, vocal anatomy, vocal health and techniques for learning songs, differences in solo and choir singing, and classical, pop, folk, country and musical theater singing techniques. All class material can be easily adaptive for all ranges of students and their abilities. Items needed: Pen, Pencil, Colored Paper, Music Staff Paper.

Art Appreciation

Art Appreciation will focus on a different artist each week, such as Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and more. The class will include a brief biography with some interesting facts about each artist. For example did you know that even though Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous artists in the world and his paintings sell for millions today, yet when he only ever sold one painting while he was alive. We will also examine the artist’s style and technique. This is an introductory course into the world of art while focusing on some of the most famous artists of all time.

Beginner’s Drawing Class

Beginner’s Drawing Class/Adventures in Drawing is designed to guide students toward developing drawing skills while encouraging personal expression and creativity. The students will be introduced to the five basic elements of shapes that combine to form all objects. Each week the student will complete a new drawing focusing on these 5 basic elements by following step by step instructions. Once the student understands the 5 basic elements, drawing on their own will be made easier because they will be learning “to see” what they want to draw. The class will focus on the basic drawing and the student may need to complete the coloring in of the drawing on their own. The instructor will offer suggestions for completing each drawing using samples and demonstrations. This class is open to beginner and intermediate level students that can follow step by step instruction.

Items Needed: #2 Pencil; Blank drawing or mixed media paper; Black Magic Marker (Sharpie fine point permanent marker is recommended); Eraser; Colored pencils (12 pack of basic colors).

Intermediate Drawing

Intermediate Drawing is an expansion of the Basic Drawing’s principles and practices. The students will continue to work through a guided drawing with the emphasis on the 5 basic elements of shape. This next 5-week series will add to their skills with the introduction of highlighting and shading. Students will be given enough structure to be successful and enough freedom to allow creative expression. Basic Drawing is the prerequisite for this class.

Items Needed: #2 Pencil; Blank drawing or mixed media paper; Black Magic Marker (Sharpie fine point permanent marker is recommended); Eraser; Colored pencils (12 pack of basic colors); Colored Pastels (basic set); Basic Watercolor
